Prescribed Burn Training

The Olmsted Society & the Village of Riverside are coordinating efforts to conduct prescribed burns in our natural areas. We currently have 18 Village of Riverside staff members and local volunteers trained to help w/ prescribed burns. Please consider joining our efforts by attending one of the training sessions listed below. We both attended the training in 2011 and highly recommend it to those with an interest in landscape restoration. The first 10 Olmsted Society members to sign up will be reimbursed using FLOS Landscape Committee funds.

Thanks in advance!

Midwest Ecological Prescription Burn Crew Member Training in March

Chicago Wilderness is offering two spring sessions of the Midwest Ecological Prescription Burn Crew Member Training class. Based on the National Wildfire Coordinating Group’s (NWCG) S-130 and S-190 courses, this training covers the basics of such topics as fire behavior, controlled burn techniques, and smoke management. The objective is to provide participants with the background necessary to safely participate on the crew of a controlled burn. Please be aware that it does not carry the official NWCG certification.

Thursday & Friday, March 26 –27, 2015, 8am-3pm both days

@ The Morton Arboretum, Lisle, IL. To register, click here.

Saturday & Sunday, March 28-29, 2015, 8am-3pm both days

@ Forest Preserves of Cook County. To register, click here.

Both sessions are identical and so you only need to attend one. However, please note that each session is a two day class. There will be a $70/person registration fee to help offset the cost of the training. Additional support is provided through the in-kind contributions of CW member organizations, including The Morton Arboretum, Forest Preserves of Cook County, and Forest Preserve District of DuPage County. Space is limited and registrations will be accepted on a first come, first served basis.
