Denniston Residence
This late 19th Century residence was built as a replacement for a Calvert Vaux designed house that was constructed as part of the original Village development in the 1870s, but was destroyed by fire. The style of the house shows a Second Empire influence with a strong cornice above the second floor and a mansard roof with casement window dormers. The prominent large porch across the full width of the house extends towards the east to form a porte cochere which rests on a separate stone foundation, a design that would influence the Arts & Crafts American foursquare of the early 20th Century. Because of how the structure is sited, the porch offers a splendid vista of the Scottswood Common, the Presbyterian Church and Swan Pond Park beyond.
