The Charm of Chickens: Reasons to Raise Backyard Hens

Presenter: Jennifer Murtoff
Wednesday: June 20, 2012 at 7:00 p.m.
Where: The Great Room of the Riverside Public Library

Home to Roost Urban Chicken Consulting was hatched upon finding that people in urban and suburban areas are flocking to chicken raising. Why is this trend catching on? One of the main reasons is eggs. Come to the keynote presentation to learn more about the other reasons behind this segment of the urban agriculture movement.

Who is Jennifer Murtoff?

The Midwest’s only chicken consultant, she provides compassionate, homespun consulting and emergency care for backyard chickens in the Chicago area. A farmer’s granddaughter, Jennifer’s passion for fowl developed as she acquired a number of kinds of birds in south central Pennsylvania. Her flock included chickens, ducks, geese, turkeys, quail, peafowl, pigeons, and golden pheasants.

She offers information and resources on chicken care from chick to adult, and, while she is not a veterinarian, can provide emergency advice and troubleshooting. Jennifer leads workshops on backyard chickens; does presentations for garden groups, schools, and other interested parties; and assists families with their flocks.

Please Note: Prior to keeping backyard hens, check whether your town or village permits the keeping of chickens.

We hope this Co-Sponsored Program by the Frederick Law Olmsted Society and the Riverside Public Library will give you something to cluck about!
